Fisheries quota – He aha te kaupapa?

He aha te kaupapa? | What’s it all about?

We’re often asked about the fisheries assets that we manage on behalf of our iwi.

TGH is responsible for managing quota which was received as part of the 1992 Fisheries Deed of Settlement, as well as a parcel of quota that was purchased from Hartstone Seafoods in 1997. We also oversee the tribe’s shareholding in Aotearoa Fisheries Ltd.

Our strategy for increasing income from these fisheries assets includes profit sharing with fishing companies, partnering on employment and cadetship opportunities for our iwi, and accessing products to support our marae Paataka Kai initiative.

Our quota includes the following fish and shellfish species:

  • Inshore: Snapper, Gurnard
  • Deepwater: Hoki, Jack Mackerel, Orange Roughie, John Dory, Ling
  • Migratory: Bigeye Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Skipjack Tuna, Albacore Tuna
  • Crayfish
  • Green-lipped Kuutai (Mussels)
  • Long and Short Fin Eel

Our fisheries partnerships include Sealord (Ngaa Tapuwae o Maaui partnership) and Kono NZ. We also lease quota to Takitimu Fisheries and Burkhart Fisheries (via Ngaati Kahungungu) and to local Kaawhia company Awaroa Fisheries which is owned by tribal members Ali Brooks and Leon Lawrence.

And finally, piiki mihi to Kono who supply us with kuutai for distribution to our marae. The kuutai is always well received.
